Introducing Senior Solicitor, Karen Arthur in our third team profile from Shaw Reynolds Lawyers, a specialist environmental, government, planning and development law firm.

1.     What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?

Since starting at Shaw Reynolds, I’ve come to really value and understand the importance of social media, so I am working at building my professional profile on-line.  I have really enjoyed connecting with like minded people on LinkedIn.

2.     What’s your go-to productivity trick?

I love solving problems.  Big, small, the weirder the better.  I get a great deal of satisfaction at being presented with a problem and working on a resolution.

3.     Are you an early bird or a night owl?

I’m definitely an early bird.  I love waking up early as spending some time doing the things that I know will set me up for the rest of the day

4.     What was your first job?

I got my first job at 14 working at Red Rooster.  I made the decision to work there purely on the fact that I liked the red uniforms. Very mature of me.  It was before EFTPOS and drive through so I would be of no use to them now.

5.     What led you to this career?

I used to love reading these junior crime books called “You be the detective”.  I always imagined myself in a Court environment.  I would have gladly jumped at any role that placed me in a Court room.  I still love being inside a Court room, even if I am not acting as the advocate.  There is a great deal of pleasure supporting our team and the Court during a hearing.

6.     What energizes you at work?

It’s the thrill of working on a difficult matter and solving a problem for someone.  And I must say Alyce’s natural enthusiasm can be very contagious!

7.     What advice would you give to your teenage self?

Not to sweat the small stuff and to re-consider dying my hair red

8.     What do you do to turn things around when you’re having a bad day?

I’m really good at telling myself that it’s not a bad day, it might just be a bad moment.  Good days are made up of good moments and I’ve got a pretty good “self-care” kit I can call upon, like talking to the people I love, walking outside, listening to music, and just making sure I don’t take myself too seriously.

9.     What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received?

One of my biggest compliments was from Chris while he was interviewing me. He said – “Karen, I know who you are.  Come and work with me”.  I didn’t have any sort of on-line presence at the time, so I was thrilled that he knew my reputation and trusted me from the start.

10.  Are you a dog person or a cat person (or neither)?

Team Dog.   I have a lovely Labrador who came into our life just before COVID-19 and she was a terrific companion during the stay at home orders.  A wonderful mix of loyal and goofy.
